Morocco is planning a $1,2 billion (R21,4 billion) project near Tangier, putting it in the running to bid to host Africa’s next Formula 1 race with South Africa and Rwanda.

The planned development will be 20km south of Tangier and will mimic Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina. The project plans include a Grade 1 circuit for Formula 1 and other motorsports, a theme park, shopping mall, hotels, and a marina.

The full outline of the project was presented in early May. Currently, a private investment of $800 million (R14,3 billion) has been secured, with the remainder expected if approval at the highest level in Morocco is granted, according to RacingNews365.
