Mexico cuts controversial cruise tax

18 May 2025

Mexico has lowered its new cruise tax to US$5 (R90) per person from July 1.

The tax, much lower than the originally proposed $42 (R770), will apply to anyone entering the country via cruise ship. It will remain at $5 for the rest of this year but will increase to $10 (R185) in 2026 and $21 (R385) in 2027, according to Travel Pulse.

Known as the non-resident duty tax, it was expected to begin in January but was postponed following backlash from cruise lines and Mexican port towns. In December, 2024, Travel News reported that cruise lines would consider altering itineraries to avoid Mexico if the measure came to fruition.
