The Norwegian Government is introducing zero-emission requirements for cruise ships in the fjords from next year.
From January 1, 2026, the requirements will apply to passenger ships less than 10 000 gross tonnage and from January 2032 for passenger ships over 10 000 gross tonnage. The government has determined that passenger ships may use biogas as an alternative fuel, and that the use of shore power will be mandatory where such facilities are available.
Zero emissions means that energy sources must not result in direct emissions of carbon dioxide or methane.
