Okinawa has approved a 2% accommodation tax per night from April 2026, which will be used to support local tourism.
The tax will cost 2% of hotel and inn stays and will be capped at a maximum of JPY2 000 (R235) per night.
The revenue will be used to preserve the scenic landscape, secure tourism workers and enhance safety measures for marine recreation, a major attraction in Okinawa. The city is also famous for its World War II history.
