A new streamlined baggage screening system being trialled at Perth Airport will avoid passengers having to take their laptops and aerosols out of their bags at security screening.
A new body scanner and CT X-ray machine screen carry-on luggage, and are designed to increase security by improving the efficiency of the screening process and detection levels.
The equipment complies with the mandatory changes announced by the Federal Government in May 2018 to further strengthen Australia’s domestic and international aviation security.
The body scanner can detect all foreign matter, metal and non-metal, carried by a person to within a millimetre of the skin, and then pin-point it on an outline of the person’s body illustrated in the form of an avatar or ‘stickperson’.
Passengers walk between two walls, pause, and stand straight in a relaxed pose. The scan takes less than a second and is easier for travellers who have difficulty raising their arms above their head.
The new Rapiscan 920CT X-ray machine uses 3D technology to detect suspect goods in passengers’ carry-on bags.
