VINCI Airports, which manages 10 airports in Portugal, has launched the first phase of the Biometric Experience project at Lisbon and Porto airports. The project, where participating passengers can use their face to replace their boarding pass, is in its testing stages.
Eligible passengers are those departing from Lisbon and Porto airports and travelling within the Schengen area, with the next phase of testing to involve flights out of Europe.
By registering at an airport kiosk or downloading the app, Biometric Experience by VINCI Airports, passengers can make their airport experience smoother and paperless. After taking a photograph of a boarding pass or passport and taking a photo of the passenger’s face, a passenger’s biometric data will be scanned without needing to present a boarding pass again.
VINCI Airports said in a statement that the project was started through the NextGenerationEU programme, which focuses on the application of technology to improve the quality of service at Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Madeira and Ponta Delgada airports.
The data collected from passengers will be deleted after the departure of their flight, ensuring confidentiality.
