Rail routes to boost Mexico tourism

28 Sep 2022
Comments | 0

Mexico plans to introduce 11 new tourist train routes by 2050, with the first to launch early next year.

The Tren Maya, the first to launch and the country’s first long-distance passenger train, will travel 1 800km around the Yucatan Peninsula, improving connectivity between tourist hotspots, including historic Mayan sites, according to Travel Off Path.

Currently, tourists in Mexico rely largely on air and bus travel, but the development of these rail routes will greatly advance the country’s tourism potential and appeal, particularly for travellers who are environmentally conscious.

The following are the ten other trains, and their respective distances, that are planned to roll out over the next 28 years:

  • Pacific Train – 4 700km

  • El Chepe – 673km

  • Western Train – 2 250km

  • Eastern Train – 2 000km

  • Transversal Train – 1 200km

  • Gulf Train – 650km

  • Bajio Train – 500km

  • Central Train – 1 300km

  • Itsmo Train – 300km

  • Oaxaca Train – 750km
