Revamp proposed for CT airport

02 Dec 2013 - by Tammy Sutherns

Acsa has begun the initial stages of an upgrade at Cape Town International Airport that could see expansion and increased airport capacity.
SRK Consulting has been commissioned to undertake Scoping and Environmental Reporting (S&EIR) for the re-alignment of the primary runway as well as additional infrastructure. If the revamp goes ahead, airport operations will be improved with the runway allowing for extra capacity and for larger aircraft to land.
A report by SRK says: “The realigned primary runway will be 3 500m in length and will be built to international specifications, allowing larger (Code F) aircraft – with a wingspan of 65m to 80m – to land at Cape Town International Airport, enabling airport expansion and increased airport capacity (the Airbus A380 has a wingspan of 79.8m). Realigning the runway will alleviate current development constraints and allow for more efficient future expansion of the airport.”
Stakeholder engagement and feedback is part of the S&EIR where interested parties can review the report, discuss it at the public meetings and provide opinion. For more information, go to www.srk.co.za
