Ryanair backtracks on Brussels reductions

Ryanair will operate its full summer 2026 schedule at Brussels Charleroi airport, after the local government rejected the ‘Charleroi pax tax’.

“We welcome the Walloon Government’s decision to scrap the Charleroi pax tax. Ryanair will not only maintain its full summer 2026 schedule at Charleroi but grow traffic by 9%,” the airline said in a statement. Charleroi’s city council had proposed a €3 (R56) tax on passengers.

However, the airline said this decision could be undermined by the Belgian Government’s plan to further raise the Federal Tax, which has increased five-fold since last July.

Earlier this year, Ryanair announced a series of flight reductions across Europe, including Brussels, due to increasing passenger taxes at airports across the region.
