Ryanair scraps loyalty scheme

Ryanair has closed its Prime membership loyalty scheme after eight months, saying that the scheme cost the airline more than it generated.

Earlier this year, Ryanair introduced a Prime subscriber discount for an annual fee of £79 (R1 560). This gave passengers a range of benefits such as free reserved seats, complimentary travel insurance, and exclusive access to monthly seat sales.

According to the airline, existing Prime members will have access to monthly low fare offers until October 2026, but no new members can sign up.

“We have generated over €4,4m (R87 million) in subscription fees. However, Prime members have received over €6m (R118,6 million) in fare discounts, so this has cost more money than it generates. This level of memberships, or subscription revenue does not justify the time and effort it takes to launch monthly exclusive Prime seat sales for members,” the airline said in a statement.
