A direct route between South Africa and Algeria could be on the cards following the expansion of an MoU for Economic Cooperation between the two countries.
“We discussed at length the reinstatement of the South Africa-Algeria air route that will facilitate people-to-people and commercial relations between the two countries,” said the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau.
The countries previously had a direct flight connection between Johannesburg and Algiers operated by Air Algérie. The airline resumed the twice-weekly flights in September 2023 before halting operations in March 2024.
According to AirlinePros, Air Algérie’s representative in the South African market, the airline currently has no plans to restart its Johannesburg flights.
The MoU was signed in December last year during the Bi-National Commission between Algeria and South Africa. It covers cooperation in trade, industrial development, and infrastructure development.
