SAA – what cover do your clients have?

Agents’ clients who took out travel insurance may already have cover for expenses (like prepaid accommodation) incurred by the sudden cancellation of flights due to the looming strike at SAA.

Travellers with Hollard Travel Insurance are covered under travel delay and missed connection benefits due to an unexpected, unforeseen strike. Cover is provided for the additional costs of meals and accommodation.

“The insurance policy includes cancel-for-any-reason cover, which will reimburse them 50% of the cancellation costs of any pre-paid, non-refundable travel and accommodation,” according to Uriah Jansen, Head of Hollard Travel Insurance.

Simmy Micheli, sales and marketing manager for Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC), says TIC’s existing policies will have “cover under the International Journey Cancellation, International Postponement, International Journey Curtailment and International Journey Extension, if flights are cancelled due to a strike.  Cover is for non-refundable portions of travel or accommodation arrangements or additional travel and accommodation expenses (three-star accommodation and economy class travel expenses).”

All TIC policies “purchasedfrom today, 14 November 2019, will not cover the cancellation of flights on 15th & 16th November 2019,” adds Simmy.

In a statement issued earlier today, SAA said it will reimburse customers, reschedule their flights or find seats for them on other carriers’ aircraft.
