Singapore Airlines (SIA) has confirmed on its social media pages (Facebook and X) that it has sent offers of compensation to the passengers who were aboard flight SQ321 on May 20, during which a man died after the aircraft experienced extreme turbulence.

“For passengers who sustained minor injuries from the incident, we have offered US$10 000 (R186 000) in compensation. For those who sustained more serious injuries from the incident, we have invited them to discuss a compensation offer to meet each of their specific circumstances when they feel well and ready to do so.

“Passengers medically assessed as having sustained serious injuries, requiring long-term medical care, and requesting financial assistance are offered an advance payment of $25 000 (R466 000) to address their immediate needs. This will be part of the final compensation that these passengers will receive,” confirmed the airline.

SIA also said it would refund the airfares of all passengers aboard flight SQ321 on May 20, including those who were not injured. The carrier has also covered the medical expenses of injured passengers and arranged for family members and loved ones to be flown to Bangkok, where many have received medical care.

“We provided all passengers with SGD1 000 (R13 800) each to meet their immediate expenses upon departure from Bangkok,” added the carrier.
