Spain fines LCCs for ‘abusive’ charges

Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights and Consumer Affairs has fined several low-cost carriers €150 million (R3,08 billion) over what it deems ‘abusive’ charges.

The fines against Ryanair, easyJet, Vueling and Volotea, relate to additional charges for carry-on luggage as well as the seating of dependants on seats next to their guardians.

One of the costs that Ryanair has come under fire for is charging passengers €20 (R410) to reissue a boarding pass.

According to theguardian.com, the four airlines are now facing a ban. The Spanish Airline Association (ALA) has said the fines are disproportionate and is advocating for the airlines, urging them to appeal.

“Sanctioning this practice limits the option to pay only for essential services… The consumer will be the main victim of this interference by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 in the European single market and the freedom of tariffs protected by European law,” said ALA.
