San Sebastián, a Spanish resort city in the Bay of Biscay, is to prevent new hotels and tourist accommodation from opening to address overtourism.
A preliminary report by the City Council revealed that for every 100 residents in the city, there are 9,91 tourists. Furthermore, the General Urban Plan outlined the negative impact tourism had on the city, including its gastronomy, culture, and the economy, which does not generate enough revenue from the tourism population.
“The supply of tourist accommodation is sufficient and it is time to limit the opening of new businesses,” the city’s Mayor, Eneko Goia, said earlier this year.
At the same time, the San Sebastián City Council revealed that it intended to implement measures to limit the opening of new tourism businesses in the city. As part of these measures, parts of the city were declared saturated in a bid to promote sustainable tourism, reported thesun.co.uk.
Anti-tourism graffiti has been found across the city.
