Spanish floods hit major airport

Floods throughout Spain have affected road and rail travel, and now operations at Barcelona-El Prat Airport have been suspended due to flooding.

The torrential downpour, which started on November 4, caused flash floods in the airport’s Terminals 1 and 2 and in the parking facilities, reports The Independent.

According to airport operator Aena, the deadly storm has already led to the suspension of 70 departing flights and the diversion of another 18 due to the flooded runway.

Spain’s national weather agency has issued a red warning for Barcelona advising people to avoid travelling into or out of the city.

Rail operators Renfe, Ouigo, and Iryo have halted specific services connecting Barcelona and Tarragona via a tunnel. Many Metro stations were also closed.

Barcelona's Cable Car, Funicular and the city's Tourist Bus have also stopped running.

The earlier flash floods in Valencia have resulted in over 200 deaths.
