Spanish islands ban late-night alcohol sales

The government of Spain’s Balearic Islands has announced a ban on the sale of alcohol between 21h00 and 08h00 in an effort to combat excessive tourism.

The law prohibits the late-night sale of alcohol in Llucmajor, Palma, and Calvia in Mallorca and Sant Antoni in Ibiza. The law applies to shops only, not to bars, restaurants, or clubs. However, the new decree also prohibits public consumption of alcohol in the streets of these tourist hotspots in Mallorca and Ibiza.

The law also bans party boats from sailing within one nautical mile of any of these destinations and prohibits party boats from picking up or dropping off passengers in the area.

Those found to be disobeying this law will face fines of €500-€3 000 (R9 930 to R59 560). The law was enacted on Saturday, May 11, and will be enforced until at least 2027.

The document was drawn up as an amendment to a 2020 law restricting activities such as happy hours, pub crawls and two-for-one drink promotions in the Balearic Islands.
