St Peter’s Basilica opens off-limit areas

St Peter’s Basilica is celebrating the 400th anniversary of its consecration with the opening of previously inaccessible areas, the launch of a multilingual translation platform and the introduction of a SmartPass.

New areas open to the public

During a press conference, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St Peter's Basilica, revealed that the Basilica would complete the restoration and expansion of its terrace and open it to the public, according to Vatican News.

Currently, one-third of the terrace is accessible, however, once the restoration is complete the terrace will feature a permanent exhibition on the history, construction and consecration of St Peter’s.

The Vatican also foresees the future opening of the large galleries of the Gregorian and Clementine domes.

Multilingual platform

In partnership with AI solutions consultant, Translated, the Vatican Dicastery for Communication at St Peter’s Basilia will introduce a real-time AI-assisted translation mobile application for visitors to follow mass proceedings in 60 different languages.

At the entrance and at various points within the Basilica, travellers will be able to scan a QR code to access the translation app on a webpage providing both audio and text translations, without the need to download the app.

SmartPass for crowd control

Gambetti also announced that St Peter’s Basilica would introduce a new real-time booking system, SmartPass, into its official platform and website to reduce crowds and regulate flow control.

The system will allow visitors to verify access availability and book admission. It will also incorporate an advanced attendance monitoring system based on a network of sensors installed inside the Basilica, communicating real-time occupancy to monitor visitor flows, promote safety and support internal space management.
