Standardise luggage sizes! – EC

06 Dec 2023

The European Commission has asked airlines to standardise their luggage sizes to make things simpler for travellers.

Last month the Commission reported that the lack of standard size requirements among airlines caused confusion among their customers and led to hidden extra costs. The Commission said while it had asked for broader standardisation, it preferred to let the industry come up with the rules itself.

Adina Vălean, the European Commissioner for Transport, said luggage size information should be provided to the traveller from the very beginning, so they know exactly what they are actually buying when they purchase the ticket, including the kind of luggage they can bring on board and what they may check in.

"That said, we reserve our right that, if nothing happens in a reasonable amount of time, we will step in," said Vălean.

Earlier this year, the European Parliament asked for the standardisation of airline carry-on luggage, reports euronews.com.

The Commission has proposed a series of measures to reinforce passengers' rights, with a specific focus on reimbursement for delays or cancelled trips.

As a result, the Commission is looking into a standard EU-wide reimbursement and compensation form.
