According to Acsa spokesperson, Gopolang Peme, the industrial action (a call for a national shutdown) planned for yesterday (November 22) at South African airports, has had minimal impact on airport operations.
“Today’s action had less impact on airport operations than that of November 10 and disruption has been minimal or absent,” said Peme. He added that airport management and stakeholders had contingency plans that they put in place where necessary.
Peme said delays at Cape Town International Airport were due to a taxi strike rather than action at the airport itself, and apart from that, there had been no disruption at airports. Gqeberha (PLZ) and King Shaka International Airport (DUR) were reported by observers to be functioning as normal.
An observer at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg said there had appeared to be a full complement of immigration staff in place. Ground handlers had reported a staff shortage due to a taxi strike in Johannesburg rather than airport workers striking.
