Air Botswana is facing a financial crisis, resulting in grounded flights and allegedly in delayed salaries too.
Air Botswana’s GSA in South Africa, APG South Africa, told Travel News that two of the carrier’s aircraft were temporarily grounded. The source explained that one of the airline’s Embraers was facing technical challenges and undergoing repairs, while its second Embraer awaited regulatory approval and certification to resume its operations.
Travelnews.africa reported that this operational standstill impacted 100% of Air Botswana's capacity and network. On April 29, Flightradar data indicated that none of the airlines’ flights were operating.
These issues should have been resolved by Friday, May 2 said APG, but Air Botswana’s Embraers only resumed operations on May 5.
Additionally, travelnews.africa reported on April 28 that the airline’s April salaries had been deferred to May due to ongoing cash flow problems. The article alleged that this would be the airline’s fourth consecutive month of salary delays, highlighting the severity of its financial struggles.
Travel News sought comment from Air Botswana, but received no reply by the time of publishing.
