Sun City Resort re-certified for environmental management

Sun City Resort has received ISO 14001 certification for its interaction with the environment and use of scarce resources.

ISO 14001 is the globally acknowledged standard for environmental management systems (EMS). It offers a framework for organisations to develop and implement an EMS, enabling them to continuously enhance their environmental performance.

The framework covers a range of elements, including resource utilisation, waste management, tracking environmental performance, and engaging stakeholders in environmental commitments.

“Sun City’s Convention Centre and our hotels receive an ever-increasing number of enquiries from groups and individuals wanting to know about our accreditation/certification on Environmental Sustainability and what measures we are putting in place to conserve the environment for the future,” said Lwazi Mswelanto, Sustainability Manager at Sun City.

The system audit assessment focused on five main areas:

1.How the resort manages water and wastewater.

2.Initiatives and processes put in place to prevent, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover waste.

3.Efforts to reduce carbon emissions and increase green energy capacity.

4.Mitigation of environmental risks and compliance with licences and permits.

5.Plans to mitigate environmental impact on the surrounding community.

“With a growing focus on ESG (environmental, social and governance), conference organisers and companies in particular, are keen to know how much water, waste, and energy they have used for their conference so that they can determine how green their conference was,” said Mswelanto.

“Sun International is proud to be the only hospitality establishment in South Africa to carry an ISO 14001 certification, which is a boost for tourism investment in the areas as this is an important USP (unique selling point) when we are attracting group bookings, especially those from abroad,” said Brett Hoppé, Resort General Manager at Sun City.
