Thailand still top despite unrest

SOUTH African travellers have

been undeterred by the recent

political unrest in Thailand

that brought Bangkok to a

standstill.

Michelle Jolley, marketing

manager of Flight Centre SA,

says South Africans are still

travelling en masse to Thailand

despite the protests. She

says there has been a slight

drop in Bangkok stopovers but

the rest of Thailand is still as

popular as before.

Amy Mortlock, marketing

and land product manager of

STA Travel, says the unrest is

focused on Bangkok, whereas

Phuket is the top-selling

destination for South Africans.

“As travellers can fly into this

city and avoid Bangkok, we

have only had a small number

of passengers change their

dates to a later stage.”

Holiday Tours’ Far East

product manager, Karen

Camm, says: “We have seen

a slight drop in demand for

Thailand but we are of the

opinion that the weak rand has

had a bigger impact than the

situation in Bangkok,”

she says.
