Tourism to become third pillar of Ivory Coast economy

The Côte d'Ivoire is gearing up to make tourism the third pillar of its economy, by raising US$6,4bn (R94,8bn) for its tourism sector.

During a round table on tourism investment in Côte d'Ivoire, held in Hamburg on November 22, the Minister of Tourism and Recreation signed a partnership with the Discovery Group. It is a high-profile partnership for the media promotion of the Ivorian destination.

Skift says the government previously raised US$5m (R74m) in pledges during a similar drive in Dubai.

The country is hoping to attract foreign hotels and tour operators and plans to create 700 000 jobs in the tourism sector by 2025. The industry was all but wiped out during the decade-long civil conflict that ended in 2011.
