Town takes control of tourism

THE quaint Western Cape town of Calitzdorp's Tourism Bureau has set itself the objective of preserving and promoting the town's tourism assets such as its "natural beauty, unique ecosystems and cultural and historical resources".
This will be achieved - according to director of tourism for Calitzdorp, Briette Barry - by creating amongst others, an urban conservancy which will aim to preserve the architecture and eradicate litter in the identified area and a street market for locals to sell their products.
"We are planning a great number of tasks which will draw the community together and market the Tourism Bureau on a much wider scale."
A number of properties suitable for tourism business opportunities are on the market in Calitzdorp at the moment, including four shops, and a 45-hectare farm under olive, vines and apricot trees. There are three workers' cottages on the premises, plus a large house in a landscaped garden, a private barbecue area and a self-catering cottage with a view of the Swartberg mountains.
