Transatlantic flights climb

Flights on the key North Atlantic routes between the UK and the US have recovered to 92% of 2019 levels, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. Volumes have risen a total of 79% over the last 12 months, reaching 3 298 departures this month, compared with 1 842 in November 2021.

British Airways remains the largest carrier on key North Atlantic routes, operating 35% of all flights, followed by Virgin Atlantic (17%), United Airlines (17%), American Airlines (15%) and Delta Air Lines (8%).

The most popular US destination for UK travellers is New York JFK, with 718 flights this month, followed by Newark (285), Boston (237), Los Angeles (201) and Chicago (169).

The UK had links to 23 US cities a year ago when borders reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic. This number has now risen 39%, to 32 cities.

UK to US trips have jumped a total of 387% on the 2020 November figure.

London Heathrow continues to remain the UK’s main transatlantic hub, with 88% of transatlantic flights departing from the airport this month.
