UBCs – clarification coming

AT THE request of Barsa’s
June Crawford, the Minister
of Tourism, Derek Hanekom,
addressed the UBC issue.
He told the audience that
his department continued
to work closely with the
Department of Home Affairs
to address the issues
surrounding the need for
unabridged birth certificates
for travelling with minors.
“The changes were put
into place in November
last year, but this was
poorly communicated by
Home Affairs and, as such,
airlines remained confused
about requirements,” he
explained. He said the
industry could expect a new
advisory note from Home
Affairs soon regarding the
changes, clearing up any
confusion once and for all.
“Our policies are now in
line with those of the UK,
the US and Canada, which
say that, in the event of
suspicion, travellers may be
required to produce certain
documentation,” he said.
