US steps up aviation cybersecurity

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently announced new cybersecurity regulations to boost digital aviation infrastructure following the rise in cyber-attacks, reports Simple Flying.

The agency has issued a new emergency amendment to its airport and airline cybersecurity requirements after attacks such as that in October last year, when 14 US airports were targeted during a distributed denial of service cyber-attack.

Airlines outside the US have begun planning major cybersecurity initiatives by 2024 alongside IT modernisation plans. According to data compiled by air transport technology specialist SITA, about 94% of airports globally have started investing in cybersecurity programmes.

In February, Scandinavian carrier SAS’s servers became the target of hacktivist group ‘Anonymous Sudan’, while seven German airports were hit by a similar attack that brought down its web traffic.
