US updates visa interview policy

10 Jan 2024
Comments | 0

Effective January 1, the US has waived visa interviews for applicants who meet certain conditions.

Under the new requirements, those re-applying for the same class of non-immigrant visas will not need to do an interview if their application falls within 48 months of the previous visa expiry. Additionally, interviews for first-time H-2 visa applicants (temporary agricultural and non-agricultural workers) will be waived.

However, for a visa interview waiver, applicants must:

  • Apply in their country of nationality or residence,
  • Ensure they have never been denied a visa unless this was waived,
  • Demonstrate there are no other aspects that could deem them ineligible.

“Consular officers may still require in-person interviews on a case-by-case basis or because of local conditions. We encourage applicants to check embassy and consulate websites for more detailed information about visa application requirements and procedures, and to learn more about the embassy’s operating status and services,” the US Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs noted on its website.
