Virgin Australia – the country’s second largest airline – has gone into voluntary administration to “recapitalise the business and help ensure it emerges in a stronger financial position on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis,” according to a statement from the airline.
The decision comes as the airline has continued to seek financial assistance from a number of parties, including state and federal governments to help it through the crisis, but it is yet to secure any support.
The airline would continue to operate its scheduled international and domestic flights, which were transporting essential workers, maintaining freight corridors, and repatriating Australians, the airline confirmed.
