Initially the location of this
hotel, in Woodstock, could be
off-putting but on arrival I was
pleasantly surprised by the
uplifting and colourful décor,
lofty reception area and
friendly, eager staff.
The hotel has 183
bedrooms, which makes it
great for sharing groups as
88 rooms can be converted
into twins. The rooms
are comfortable with the
necessary amenities.
The nine conference rooms
make this an ideal venue for
events requiring breakaway
rooms. Central 1, 2 and 3
can accommodate combined
cinema-seating capacity for
300 delegates. Two large
pillars in the middle of the
venue obstruct the view from
certain angles and are not
ideal. There are magnificent
views of Table Mountain and
one would ideally like to set
up the tea and coffee breaks
on the balcony, however I
was warned that when the
south-easter howls it is best
to set up the breaks inside.
An array of smaller venues
ranging in capacity from 40,
70 and 90 for cinema-style
seating, makes the venue
versatile.
WiFi is available throughout
the hotel. Guests who
overnight receive 100MB
free daily and conferencing
guests 200MB. Once the
complimentary data is used,
it is payable and guests can
choose between a standard
and high-speed connection.
This is something to keep in
mind if your group includes
a high level of Internet users
as it could become costly.
Parking for delegates is
either at the bottom of the
building or at the overflow
facility next door. There are
300 bays available. The
parking area is shared by
surrounding offices and
unfortunately the lifts to the
hotel floor were not in a
very good state during my
visit. The hotel has a lovely
unique urban amphitheatre
between the buildings, which
could make for an interesting
location for your event.
Since the name change
from Upper Eastside to
DoubleTree by Hilton, there
have not been many notable
changes. This is
an affordable
and solid
four-star
property
