WHO DG: “Coronavirus contained in China but still global threat”

China has 99% of the world’s confirmed cases of coronavirus but it still holds a high-risk assessment on a global level.

Globally,43 103 cases have been confirmed, with China recording the majority (42 708) of them. Outside China there have been no deaths and only 395 cases confirmed.

Data from WHO’s latest situational report, as of February 11, shows that there are still no confirmed cases in Africa.

WHO DG, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, says the outbreak remains very much an emergency for China, but holds a very grave threat for the rest of the world.

At a briefing on 2019-nCoV on February 11, Ghebreyesus also confirmed that the first vaccine could be ready in 18 months.

“This will take time to develop, but in the meantime, we are not defenceless. There are many basic public health interventions that are available to us now, and which can prevent infections now.”
