THE Travel and Events Company
will soon launch AfriGay, a range
of travel packages and events
specifically catering for the
outbound LGBT market.
Michael Gladwin, owner of
The Travel and Events Company,
previously 7th Element Travel,
said the market was relatively
untouched in South Africa and
that the International Gay and
Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA)
had identified South Africa as an
emerging travel market with great
potential for growth.
The first event in Africa and
the Indian Ocean islands will
take place in Mauritius in March
2020, with World Leisure Holidays
appointed as an official partner.
Martine Sanderson, groups
sales manager for World Leisure
Holidays, said no large-scale
events had been organised for
this sizeable and high-income
community on this side of the
world before.
“We got involved as a way
to differentiate ourselves as a
company by tapping into this
very untouched market in South
Africa. Our hope is that that it will
become an annual event,” she
said.
Martine added that the event
was a way for World Leisure
Holidays to acknowledge the
LGBT community and their love of
travel. She said it was a big step
for Mauritius to openly welcome
the gay and lesbian community to
their country and she was proud
of World Leisure’s involvement in
facilitating this.
AfriGay Mauritius 2020 will book
out the 240-room Ambre Resort,
and will attract LGBT travellers
from around the world with the
aim of connecting international
community members.
