Air travel round-up: Asiana Airlines to exit Star Alliance

Asiana Airlines is to leave the Star Alliance on December 16. 

To ensure a smooth transition for customers, the alliance has confirmed the following arrangements:

  • Members of any Star Alliance airline's frequent flyer programme can continue earning miles on Asiana-operated flights departing on or before October 15.
  • Miles can still be redeemed for Star Alliance award tickets and upgrades for travel completed on or before December 16, subject to the policies of each frequent flyer programme.
  • Star Alliance Gold and Silver members will continue to receive their alliance benefits, including priority services, until December 16.
  • Star Alliance Gold members will also retain lounge access across the Star Alliance network, including eligible OZ lounges, until December 16.

The Lufthansa Group has prepared for the transition by arranging alternative travel options for affected customers, including the reprotection of existing tickets on Korean Air from September 2026.

SWISS extends Dubai suspension

SWISS has extended the suspension of its flights to Dubai until and including October 24.

The airline said it continued to monitor the situation in the Middle East and remained in close contact with authorities in Switzerland and the region, as well as with partners across the Lufthansa Group.

BA strengthens Canada network

British Airways and Canadian carrier Porter Airlines have announced a codeshare agreement, giving BA customers access to 17 destinations across Canada, including Ottawa, Edmonton and Winnipeg, via Toronto and Montreal.

Members of the British Airways Club will also be able to earn Avios and tier points on Porter Airlines flights.

Air India Express boosts UAE connectivity

Air India Express has launched direct flights between Navi Mumbai International Airport and Abu Dhabi. 

Services are scheduled to begin on July 15 with two weekly flights, increasing to three on July 29.
