Air travel round: up ITA joins Star Alliance

ITA Airways has joined Star Alliance with immediate effect.

The airline will add more than 350 daily flights to the alliance network. Customers will have more options when travelling across Italy and Europe while also benefiting from expanded connectivity between southern Europe and other international markets.

Passengers will benefit from priority services, lounge access, reciprocal frequent flyer programme recognition, including earning and redeeming miles. Star Alliance Gold customers will have access to ITA airport lounges in Rome, Milan and Catania. 

The alliance’s membership now includes 26 airlines.

IndiGo names Willie Walsh its new CEO

India’s IndiGo has named IATA’s current Director General, Willie Walsh, as its new CEO.

According to Reuters, Walsh’s term at IATA will end on July 31 and he is expected to join IndiGo by August 3.

The airline’s previous CEO, Pieter Elbers, resigned after mass flight cancellations in early March. In the interim, the airline’s Co-founder, Rahul Bhatia has taken over management.

ITA resumes London Heathrow flights

During the earnings call for its 2025 full year financial results, ITA Airways CEO, Joerg Eberhart, announced that the airline had resumed London Heathrow flights.

On March 29, the airline resumed operations for its twice-daily flights between Rome Fiumicino and London Heathrow, using Lufthansa slots allocated to it during its integration into the group. ITA Airways last operated the route in March 2024. 

Flights depart Rome at 07h50 and 13h50 and arrive in London at 09h40 and 15h40, respectively. The return flights depart London at 10h30 and 16h30 and arrive in Rome at 14h10 and 20h10.
