Airbus waves A380 goodbye

Airbus is discontinuing the production of its A380, with the last one scheduled for delivery in 2021.

The decision comes after Emirates reduced its remaining A380 order by 39 aircraft, down to 14, and opted to order 40 of the smaller A350 and 30 A330neo aircraft instead. The decision is also due to the lack of order backlog with other airlines.

The smaller aircraft will be delivered to Emirates [in two sets] starting from 2021 and 2024 respectively.

“Emirates has been a staunch supporter of the A380 since its very inception. While we are disappointed to have to give up our order, and sad that the programme could not be sustained, we accept that this is the reality of the situation”, said Emirates chair, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum.

Airbus ceo, Tom Enders described the move as “the only sensible decision”.

Airbus will continue to support the A380 while it is still operational. It will also remain a part of the Emirates fleet until 2030.
