Passengers on Icelandic carrier PLAY Airlines’ flight OG122 recently took a once in a lifetime detour to watch an erupting volcano.

According to Simple Flying, 10 minutes before it was due to land, the flight travelling from New York to Keflavik, Iceland, detoured to fly over a volcano erupting 16km away from the airport.

Iceland is a geothermally active island located on both the North American tectonic plate and the Eurasian tectonic plate and many PLAY Airlines flights from Europe are exposed to eruptions.

Footage taken by some of the passengers onboard has been shared by ABC News, and can be watched here.
