There will be no cancellations of services offered by the Blue Train, following the derailment of its ‘Train Set 2” last Sunday morning, said a statement. Passengers with bookings for the next few months have been furnished with a new schedule.

The statement, by operating company Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), only confirmed that an empty 19-coach Blue Train derailed early on November 7, at the Union Station Loop in Germiston.

"This was a staged (unmanned) train with no passengers on board. No injuries were reported on site," said Transnet's Sibu Majozi in a statement, adding that TFR would investigate the cause of the derailment and apply remedial action where necessary.

Early reports that vandalism was the cause of the derailment have neither been confirmed nor denied by TFR.

The Blue Train is known as one of the most luxurious trains in the world. It is one of South Africa's tourism icons and has has been running under the name Blue Train since 1933.
