The French city of Cannes has become the latest European destination to implement limits on cruise ships after city councillors voted to introduce new regulations in the city’s ports.
From January 1, 2026, only ships with fewer than 1 000 passengers will be allowed in the port, while larger ships will be expected to transfer passengers to smaller boats to enter Cannes. A maximum of 6 000 passengers will be allowed to disembark daily.
According to Aljazeera, cruise operators are calling the restrictions damaging for destinations and for passengers.
This comes after Nice announced plans to ban cruise ships exceeding 190 metres in length and with a capacity of 900 passengers from July 1.
