Cape Town to join SA’s F1 bid

Cape Town is positioning itself as a potential host for a Formula 1 Grand Prix, with plans for a street circuit around the DHL Stadium in Green Point.

Cape Town Grand Prix SA (CTGPSA) is reportedly planning to submit its bid to South Africa’s Bid Steering Committee, according to BusinessTech. The company aims to bring Formula 1 back to the country after a 30-year hiatus.

The proposed 5,7km circuit aligns with the rising global popularity of urban F1 races, akin to the iconic events in Monaco, Singapore and Miami.

CTGPSA has emphasised this trend, highlighting the international allure of city-based circuits. The group’s credentials include hosting motorsport events within the Green Point Sport Tourism Precinct, most notably a successful Formula E race in 2023.

Meanwhile, Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, acknowledged the proposal but stressed the importance of a thorough review process.

An F1 race in Cape Town could have a transformative economic impact. The 2023 Formula E event generated R2,13 billion in direct and indirect spending.

However, Cape Town faces stiff competition from other venues, including a purpose-built circuit under construction near Fisantekraal airport and the historic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit near Johannesburg, which is undergoing upgrades to secure FIA Grade 1 accreditation, as reported by Travel News.

South Africa last hosted a Formula 1 race in 1993 at the Kyalami Circuit.
