Christchurch one of the New Zealand cities affected by earthquakes last year, has unveiled plans to rebuild the city.
The plans include a low rise city centre, surrounded by open green spaces and capitalises on the Avon River flowing through the city.
There is an eight story limit imposed on new buildings and the city centre will be slightly smaller than it was before the earthquake. The city centre will be clustered around the city square and will have precincts for health, arts and entertainment, shopping, justice and emergency services with pedestrian areas. A central library and sports centres are also being planned for the city.
The rebuilding of the city is scheduled to begin before the end of this year.
It is hoped the rebuilding of the city will make it one of Australasia’s best cities and a city of the 21st century, a city where people would want to visit.
