COMAIR is investigating
the launch of a route
to Ascension Island.
“We have been
approached to fly to
Ascension, in the South
Atlantic, once a month and
are currently working with
the Department of Trade
and Industry in this regard,”
ceo, Erik Venter, told TNW
on the sidelines of a press
event to introduce the next
generation Boeing 737-800
to the British Airways
Comair fleet.
Meanwhile Comair is
preparing to commence
weekly flights to St Helena
later this year. “We are still
awaiting the certification of
the airport before we can
announce when exactly
the tickets will go on sale,
however we anticipate we
should be ready to go by
about May and tickets will
probably be priced between
R4 000 and R5 000,”
Erik said.
He confirmed that the
new B737 would operate
the St Helena service. “It’s
perfect because it has the
technology required to keep
up with a five-hour flight.”
Erik said the route would
not see massive numbers
because St Helena was
home to only 4 000
citizens and had only about
80 hotel rooms. “But if
travellers would like to go
to St Helena for tourism,
there is beautiful scuba
diving and hiking and it is
a wonderful escape away
from the city.”
