Coronation – London expects transport delays

Transport for London (TfL) has issued an advisory for possible travel delays over the Coronation Weekend(May 6-8).

There will be changes to bus service routes due to road closures. On May 6, buses will be diverted or stop short of their destinations in the Westminster area.

Stations are also expected to be busier than usual that day, including Westminster, Green Park, Charing Cross, Embankment, Victoria, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Temple, and Marble Arch stations. St James’s Park Station will be closed and Hyde Park Corner will be an exit-only station.

Night Tube and London Overground night services will run on May 5-6, while on May 7, London Underground services will end before midnight as usual, but there will be no night Tube.

Short-term safety measures implemented over the weekend, including queuing and changes to how travellers enter or leave stations, are also expected to cause travel delays.

Those planning to travel in London for the weekend have been advised to plan ahead, check their travel routes, and allow more time for their journey.

TfL advises those wanting to attend the coronation events to walk if possible, however there will be limited access to the procession route from Victoria Station and spectators may be directed to Hyde Park for screening sites.

The estimated walking times to the viewing areas are:

  • London Victoria to Green Park and St James's Park, 15 minutes
  • London Paddington to Hyde Park, 15 minutes
  • London Marylebone to Hyde Park, 25 minutes
  • London Charing Cross to St James's Park, 15 minutes
