Delta Air Lines is planning special flights on April 8 for passengers to view the solar eclipse while onboard.

According to Delta's Lead Meteorologist, Warren Watson, the total eclipse on April 8 will only be seen again over the Northern hemisphere in 2044.

The special flight is planned so that time spent in the path of totality is maximised. The domestic flight, operated on an A220-300, will depart from Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) on April 8 at 12h15 and arrive at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) at 16h20.

Delta is offering five additional special flights maximising passengers' views of the partial eclipse, before and after its peak on April 8.

  • DL 5699, operated by an Embraer E175, will depart from DTW at 14h59, heading for Westchester County Airport.
  • DL 924, operated by an A320, will depart from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 08h04, bound for Dallas Fort Worth International Airport.
  • DL 2869, operated by an A319, will depart from LAX at 09h00 and land at San Antonio International Airport (SAT).
  • DL 1001, operated by an A220-300, will depart from Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) at 10h08 heading for San Antonio International (SAT).
  • DL 1683, operated by an A320 will depart from Salt Lake City at 09h55 and head for Austin.
