More information has emerged about the proposed Durban-Réunion air service, confirming that the route will operate as a charter rather than a scheduled commercial service, following earlier speculation about airline involvement.
The charter is being launched through a partnership between Engage Connection and FLY VETIV'AIR, with Global Airways providing operational assistance. Engage Connection is the marketing arm of FLY VETIV'AIR, the charterer and the marketing operator.
“The initiative is a strategic partnership between Engage Connection and FLY VETIV'AIR to launch direct flights between Durban and Réunion Island. Global Airways’ role is limited to the operational delivery of the aircraft, and the concept will commence as a charter operation. As with any services, operations remain subject to regulatory processes, commercial alignment, and final approvals,” said a Global Airways spokesperson.
Flights will operate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with the first charter service scheduled to depart on February 27 and return on March 6.
According to a Facebook post by Engage Connection, additional departure dates are planned for February 28 and March 1, 6, 7 and 8, with returns planned for March 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15. The group is also offering packages that include accommodation and transfers, which are available on request during the time of booking.
The route will be operated by an Airbus A320-200 with a configuration of 168 seats, with 12 premium economy cabins and 156 economy class cabins.
It was believed that LIFT could launch the route after Global Airways submitted an application for three weekly flights between Durban and Saint-Pierre Pierrefonds International Airport in Réunion. However last month, LIFT denied this by saying they had no involvement in the plans initiated by Global Airways.
