Ethiopian volcano causes ash cloud

The eruption of Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi volcano on Sunday has sent volcanic ash into India, Yemen and Oman’s airspace, causing disruptions to flights in the region.

The Airport Authority of India and the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre at Toulouse have issued a volcanic ash advisory notifying aviation operators that the volcanic eruption or ash cloud poses a hazard to aircraft.

It has also asked pilots, dispatchers and cabin crew to strictly avoid volcanic ash-affected areas and make adjustments to flight planning, routing, and fuel considerations based on the latest advisory.

Impacted flights

Air India said it had cancelled 11 flights on Monday and Tuesday. Middle Eastern carriers, including Emirates and Etihad, told the Khaleej Times, that so far, their flights had not been affected, however they are monitoring the situation and will advise their passengers.

On Monday, KLM was forced to cancel a flight to Delhi, however operations have resumed as normal.

According to India’s Meteorological Department, the cloud is expected to move towards China.
