Strikes in Portugal, France, and Spain will impact Easter weekend travel.
According to Travel Weekly, strikes by Portuguese immigration officials have been timed to coincide with this weekend, as five days of industrial action will be taking place from today, April 6.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FDCO) has released a statement saying there may be travel disruptions due to the strikes. It suggests travellers allow additional time to clear border control entering and exiting Portugal, and to check with their airline or tour operator for guidance over the strikes.
According to Condé Nast Traveller, border services at Faro Airport and Madeira Airport will be especially affected, as the restructuring of Portugal’s immigration and border service has led to the strikes in the country.
Meanwhile, ongoing strikes across the transport sector in France will also affect travel this weekend, with the FDCO warning of disruptions to cross-channel travel. According to its advisory for France, there is a great possibility of delays, as high levels of cross-channel traffic are expected on all routes.
Co-ordinated strikes and large demonstrations are expected in France, which may last for several days. More flight cancellations and delays are expected until Saturday, April 8, due to strikes by French air traffic controllers.
Travellers are advised to check the latest information with their travel operators and confirm bookings prior to travel.
According to The Sun, airport workers in Spain will also be striking this weekend. Seventeen airports will be affected including Malaga, Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.
Unions representing Swissport workers called for a series of ongoing 24-hour strikes after failed negotiations from February 24. These strikes take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and will continue until April 13.
