TeamLab Borderless, the immersive digital art phenomenon, has reopened for its flagship exhibition in the Azabudai Hills district of Tokyo.

TeamLab is an art collective that uses space, mirrors and cutting-edge technology to create its widely Instagrammed artworks that visitors can explore and interact with. The dynamic light shows react to the position and behaviour of the visitor and to the other artworks, so every visit and interaction is unique.

The museum closed in 2022 after five years of operation. The 2024 reopening is not just a location change. TeamLab Borderless has also expanded and now offers 10 000 sqm of installations across five floors with more than 50 artworks.

In 2018, TeamLab in Tokyo was the world’s most-visited museum dedicated to a single artist, having welcomed 2,3 million visitors. The collective also holds exhibitions in Beijing, Melbourne, New York, London, Singapore and Taipei.

On the inspiration for the new museum, Takashi Kudo, TeamLab’s Communications Director, told CNN: “These lights are like nature. Sometimes when you’re in nature there are stimuli everywhere, almost too many stimuli, then everything comes together in perfect harmony. That experience is what we want to create.”
