The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has warned that spontaneous and occasionally violent protests in central Paris and elsewhere in France may lead to disruption for road travel today (March 28) and may continue during the week.
In an updated advisory issued on March 24, the body warned that protests are likely to take place and could occur with little notice. There is also ongoing strike action affecting multiple sectors, including transport networks. Co-ordinated strike action and large-scale demonstrations are planned for today.
Also on March 24, the UK’s King Charles III cancelled his planned trip to France, due to take place from March 26-29.
This news comes soon after recent strikes plagued French airports from March 20-23.
Paris and most major cities – including Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux and Rennes – have been hit by protests. Most long-haul flights have been unaffected, but there has been some impact on short-haul European and domestic air traffic, CNN reports. Trains and public transport are where visitors could most feel the effects of the strikes.
“You should monitor the media, check the latest advice with operators before travelling, avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities,” the FCDO advises. “The emergency phone number in France is 112.”
