Frankfurt Airport has suspended passenger operations at Terminal 2 to begin renovations. Airlines based in the terminal have been relocated to Terminal 3.
The airport plans to invest R28,6 billion in the project.
The project will reorganise terminal operations, including centralised security checkpoints, improved passenger flow and more flexible use of retail space. Fraport AG will also fully upgrade the building’s core safety and technical systems along with the elevators, escalators, restrooms and office areas.
Aircraft stands, the baggage-handling system, underground parking, the Sky Line people mover and terminal connections will remain operational throughout the project.
The main construction work will only begin in 2030, with full operations expected to resume in the mid-2030s. Once complete, the terminal is projected to have capacity for more than 10 million passengers a year.
